I just saw this in the New York Times.
The man that sells peelers on the street, Joe Ades, died on Sunday. It is amazing that in a city so big, one person can stand out and be “known” by so many.

Here is a link to the story.

Oh no! I’ll miss seeing him. I am not ready to read the article yet, but have heard his story and it’s amazing. May he rest in peace.

i am quite sure i had one of his peelers for awhile! i wonder what ever became of it… i have moved TOO many times! i think i got it at a street fair one year. it was an unusual – and effective – shape.

I just walked through Union Square yesterday afternoon and saw flowers on his corner and a sign that said, “we’ll miss you peeler man”. I immediately came home and googled him.
I hope he knows, somehow, somewhere, how many lives he brightened just by being himself. I remember watching his spiel for the first time and being amazing at this old man hunched over in the hot sun. I had no idea of what his life was really like.
I wish I’d bought a peeler!
