I would like to introduce you to

Sprout – s/he has a heartbeat – which was an amazing sight this morning and such a relief.  S/he is measuring a bit behind which was a topic of discussion this morning, but did not seem like a huge problem.   Dr. B was not super excited about the fact that we are planning on going to go see a midwife.   She seems to think that I have a good chance of being high risk because of PCOS since that could put me at a higher risk for gestational diabetes.    I don’t think there is any chance that will not go to a midwife – unless I have some really big complications.   My mother is midwife and that was the concept of birth that I was raised on.   (I would never say it was the only way to have a great birth however.)   I see me having to stand my ground on this one – or just not have my confidence knocked down about it.

Yay for the Sprout and the heartbeat!!

You have to do what’s right for you. It’s too early to say whether you’re going to be high-risk or not, so I would definitely stick to your guns about the midwife center.

Yay Sprout! And I think making the midwife choice is certainly up to you. They know what they are doing and if they feel like you need help they can’t give I’m sure they will send you to someone who can.

    Congrats! Hello Sprout!
Your healthcare provider is your decision. And as far as I know midwives are not generally stupid people who want to put their patients at risk…if there are “high risks” they will take them seriously. I think you need to do what is right for you and therefore little Sprout.

Yay! What a way to start the morning… seeing that little heartbeat.

    very cool, you are sprouting!

i agree with nutella and j. k-c. you will be picking a *professional* midwife to work with who will take all these issues into consideration. there are even midwife/physician teams if it seemed the condition (which by the way, doesn’t even exist yet, though *maybe* it will manifest at some point) should warrant physician care specifically.

i know you really want to go with a midwife… if you feel concerned that you are not taking dr B’s concerns to heart, maybe you include in your midwife interview questions something like…

have there been women in your care that you ended up referring out to a physician instead of continuing with you through their pregnancy? were they what you consider high-risk? what kinds of conditions/situations do *you* consider to be high-risk? do you work with high-risk pregnancies or do you always send them elsewhere?

who defines high-risk? and why do they never consider the *medical* interventions that are so common, and many not shown to be needed, as adding risk?

so many things to understand about the *high-risk* thing. i know for many of us, we would automatically be considered high-risk cause we are OLD ;)

mostly just wanted to say… SO COOL THAT YOU ARE SPROUTING!

A midwife won’t take you if you’re high risk, let her make that decision with you.

What a relief to see that heartbeat! I’m totally jealous

Hey Sprout! Congrats girls….it’s SUCH a good feeling to see that little heartbeat!! AWESOME that you’re going the midwife route too – you’ll be SO happy you did. xo

It’s great that you are holding your ground on the midwife matter. Frankly, doctors are far too fond of scaring us into thinking that our bodies aren’t capable of this thing that women’s bodies have been doing, oh, since the dawn of humanity–even with “risks.” I so hate when doctors act as though midwives aren’t trained medical professionals. Argh. Anyway, you know your body, and you know what the right decision is for you, and that, my dear, is what is most important.

It’s so nice to meet Sprout, and I’m so glad s/he is doing well. xoxo

That first heartbeat still brings me to tears! Yay. Yeah, don’t listen to your RE about the midwife. If you become high-risk, your midwife will probably transfer your care to an OB anyway. Are you in NYC? If so, call my midwife. Call her yesterday. She is amazing.
